John Delaney Retiring!

After almost 15 years as the Storyboard guy at Cap, original faculty member, John Delaney is leaving the big city and, unfortunately, Capilano University. He'll still be dropping into town for guest lectures but if anyone would like to say "so long" to John, he and his band, The Indestructibles, are playing the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam on September 18th! Come out to join other former students and fellow instructors and wish John luck in the Okanangan!

The show starts at 9:30pm but get there early for a seat and maybe connect with other Commercial Animation grads!

Paige has been volunteering for Pivot Legal Society, specifically within their Hope in Shadows Project. She wanted me to tell everyone that they're looking for an animator to do a short animation about Hope in Shadows. Here's their schpiel:

Hope in Shadows is a unique project based around a photography contest for residents in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The prize-winning photos are then used to create a calendar that gives a glimpse of the hope, spirit and courage of people living in Canada's poorest neighbourhood.
Hundreds of Downtown Eastside residents turn out to participate in the contest, the wards ceremony and the gallery exhibition of the photos, making this a vibrant community event.
Hope in Shadows fosters local arts and culture, gives residents a sense of pride in their community and builds confidence in participants and photography winners. The exhibition, calendar and high profile media attention promotes understanding of the people who live in this impoverished neighbourhood.
Finally, the selling of the calendar helps hundreds of people both financially and through providing tangible work experience.

I think they're also looking for artists to design some pamphlets and posters ect. I'm pretty sure it's strictly volunteer, but it'd be good work for your portfolio anyways. Let me know if you're interested!

Vancouver Opera teams up with animation studios to launch Operabot, an international online animation contest for its 2009-2010 Golden Anniversary Season!

We invite your animation students to participate in this exciting contest!

Contestants are challenged to create animated shorts from any of the four operas from the 2009/2010 season: Norma, Nixon in China, The Marriage of Figaro and Madama Butterfly.

Entries will be posted to our Youtube channel and will be open to voting, with the final winners chosen by a panel of judges from leading Vancouver-area animation studios, including Pixar, EA, Rival Schools, Bardel and Rainmaker.

Prizes include animation software computer gear, gaming packages, mp3 players and digital cameras.

Hey gang!
Congratulations to you all!! SO many long nights, and loads of stress and now it's all over..
.. well almost anyway! We didn't get a class photo, and the classroom still needs to be cleaned, BADLY, and each of us needs pack up our stuff.

SO, that being the case, a bunch of us are thinking that we should all get together for a GREAT BIG CLASSROOM CLEAN UP!!! This Wednesday, starting from 1-ish. I'll bring the garbage bags!!

Well hello there, I didn't see you come in....
...I thought I'd mention to everyone that we need as much artwork as possible for the Gradbook cover. So grab your best work, ideally it should be colored or at least filled in. Everything is going to be put into a big collage so remember that when choosing your work. You're welcome to put in as much artwork as you like, the more the better i imagine. It would be very helpful to the gradcover staff if you submitted the artwork as psd's, that way we don't have to cut out your artwork from a jpg. Keep in mind this is the cover and it should represent our best work, which shouldn't be a problem cause you're all very talented SOB's. The folder for the Commercial Animation submissions is located in Tsunami-Students-2ndYear-!Grad Cover Submissions.

so we're all talking about going out to celebrate the end of term with a few drinks and then the possibility of karaoke or dancing, and EVERYONE is invited. (including the 1st years and digital)

so drag your beaten exhausted body down to the Brickhouse (730 Main St, Vancouver) at 8:00 PM for fun and good times. They have a pool table, darts and inexpensive good micro brew. You can't go wrong.

Possible ways to get there, for the uncertain and unaware: Take the sky train to main st/chinatown and walk the 4 or so blocks. OR: jump on the 8 fraser or the 3 main st buses from waterfront station (after riding the sea bus.)

DO NOT DRIVE cuz we will expect to see you wasted before the night is over!!

I'm extending an invitation to you to help out an awesome campaign run by the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House that collects gently used winter clothing for youth.

We all know how it feels to be freezing, damp and grumpy. The weather is getting nastier each day and there are kids who would greatly appreciate a warm jacket or pair of gloves this season. For those who missed out on spring cleaning, now's your chance to check those closets and storage spaces for unwanted winter gear.

I've attached a flyer for more details. For additional motivation, there are 20 LRG prize packs to be won and 2 grand prizes including a LRG x Forum snowboard and LRG x G-shock watch. If you wish to enter the draw, let me know and I'll attach your contact info to your donation. If I end up winning either of the grand prizes, I will create my own draw with everyone who has donated as a sign of my appreciation for your awesomeness (and generosity).

I will be gratefully collecting GENTLY USED coats, jackets, scarves, hats/toques, mittens and gloves. (please, no blankets, comforters, etc.)

I hope everyone's had a great summer and arrives back safely. Classes start on Sept. 2nd in the 2nd year room. Desks will, as you know, be assigned to you. If you would prefer another location, you can trade places with any other willing classmate.

There have been some changes that we can discuss on Tuesday:

1. We're a university now.

2. Erich decided to move to Toronto this summer.

3. We have hired Keith Ingham to take Erich's place. Keith has taught this course before and brings extensive animation experience (Don Bluth, Disney) to the program. Keith is a member of this blog now and will be posting info. Welcome back Keith!

4. Our life drawing workshop on Wednesdays has been lost due to a new timetabling system. We will have to find another time, probably in the evening, at least for this term. I'm working on getting it back to Wednesday mornings in the Spring term.

5. We replaced the drafting tables in Arbutus with donkeys.

6. We have a new line test system to replace Flipbook which was always giving us problems.

7. We have a brand new lab with faster computers, big wide flat-screens and (thanks to Craig!) half the lab now has Cintiq's!

If you go to www.toonboom.com you can sign up and download the new title: Pencil Check Pro. I did and it looks pretty good and they sell 5-pack licenses. I haven't hooked up a camera yet but it looks more stable than Digicel Flipbook.

If anyone is interested in taking it for a spin and giving me feedback, please do so! Let me know what you think after you've tried it. Flipbook and their "license" caused us a lot of grief last year.

Summer Drop In Life Drawing!!

Hey Everyone!
Summer Drop In Life Drawing is starting up on MAY 26.

Sessions take place on the third floor of the Arbutus building in room 301.
Five dollars a session is the cost (unless you buy tickets), and we start at 6:30 pm. (going till about 9:30)

Make sure to take advantage!! Proceeds from all life drawing sessions go to paying for our Gradshow party!

So I was at my friend's grad at VFS and one of her teachers told me about this stop motion animator named Barry Purves, and I think everyone should check it out because I feel it's totally amazing!

He mentioned this one specifically, it kinda sucks that there's no sound but! Look at the rotating stage! It's so crazy awesome! Also if you click and look at the youtube page it has the dialogue written out so it makes sense.
